Diseases Caused by Smoking
Smoking causes several diseases. Some of these diseases are COPD (Cardio Pulmonary Disease), CHF (Congestive Heart Failure), Lung Cancer, Asthma, Pneumonia, and Emphysema, these are the lung related diseases which smoking cigarettes can cause. Other medical conditions caused or contributed to by smoking cigarettes are Arterial Sclerosis, Blood Clots, Stokes, Mouth and Stomach Cancers, as well as some other Cancers, Birth Defects, Low Birth weight, Premature Labor, Miscarriage. Smoking can also cause bad breath, things taste different, and home and clothing smell of smoke.
COPD (Cardio Pulmonary Disease)
is a serious disease of the lungs and heart and blood stream. COPD causes breathing problems and makes the capillaries ability to put oxygen into the blood stream. The exchange of oxygen and Carbon dioxide in the capillaries is not efficiently exchanged.
CHF (Congestive Heart Failure)
is heart disease. This causes not enough blood to be circulated in the body and also causes the heart tissue to slowly die. It also causes swelling due to the heart not being able to circulate the blood out of the lower extremities properly. This also causes fluid to build up around the heart and can cause heart failure.
Lung and other Cancers
Cancer caused by smoking cigarettes is caused by the carcinogens in cigarettes. Carcinogens are cancer causing agents which are inhaled when smoking cigarettes and also can enter the body when tobacco is smoked in a pipe, cigar or chewed. Mouth Cancer is more likely caused by chewing tobacco than smoking cigarettes, however mouth, throat and stomach cancers can be caused by smoking cigarettes as well. Carcinogens inside of the body can settle anywhere and cause just about any type of cancer.

Why Smoking is Dangerous
There are few things in the world today that are as dangerous to humans and yet as commonplace as smoking. Although the habit has steadily decreased in popularity, it is still a threat not only to people, but also to the environment, to our pets and animals, and to society in general.
Why smoking is dangerous is an easy yet complicated issue. There are over 700 chemical additives found in every cigarette. When the cigarette is lit, and reaches nearly 2,000 degrees dangerous chemical compounds are released into the air, and most of them are inhaled by the smoker as well as those around him. Nicotine is the biggest factor in cigarettes because it encourages the body to become addicted. Once the person is addicted to the nicotine in cigarettes, the possibilities for diseases such as lung cancer, throat cancer, respiratory problems as well as a host of other issues increases.
The longer a smoker smokes, the more increased chance they will have of developing a host of ailments that not only cause him or her misery as well as possibly their life, but also costs insurance companies money to care for them, which in turn costs the average taxpayer bundles.

Smoking Addiction - Why Is It Difficult To Quit?
There is no doubt that smoking is addictive. It doesn't seem to affect everybody the same way though. Some people have great difficulty quitting smoking, while others give it up with almost no effort.
Nicotine is the addictive substance of tobacco. It gets absorbed into the bloodstream where it affects brain chemistry which alters mood and focus. Because of the large surface area of the lungs, smokers receive a big "hit" of nicotine with every puff they take. Since nicotine is absorbed directly into the bloodstream the brain receives an almost instantaneous dose with every puff of a cigarette.
Nicotine primarily affects the mid-brain -- the part of the brain that controls moods and emotions. It produces pleasurable sensations but also causes anxiety and cravings when accustomed doses are withheld. A nicotine substitute such as a patch or chewing gum can help alleviate these negative feelings.
Because of the immediate stimulation to the brain, smoking behaviour is reinforced. When smokers try to quit, they have to overcome both the physical addiction to nicotine and the association they have made between smoking and the pleasurable sensations it produces.
Besides the physical addiction, there are also strong behavioural and social links to smoking. Certain situations (such as the end of a meal or going to a pub) become so associated with smoking that smokers reach for a cigarette without even thinking about it. Smokers may also crave cigarettes during times of stress.

Stop Smoking Now
Do you wish you could stop smoking, but think you're just too old to kick the habit? Research has proven time and time again that you are never too old to stop smoking. As soon as you rub out your last cigarette, you will begin to experience the health and lifestyle benefits of living without smoking. Here are eight things you should know if you think you might be too old to kick the habit.
- If you think it's too late to make a difference, think again. You can always improve your health, and one of the best ways to do that is to stop smoking. Even if you have been smoking for 50 or more years, the effect of quitting can be noted right away. Just 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your body will demonstrate a marked improvement. Your blood pressure and pulse will decrease closer to their normal range. Eight hours after your last cigarette, the nicotine and carbon monoxide in your bloodstream will be cut in half!
- You will breathe better if you quit smoking. Is anyone ever too old to breathe better? If you enjoy laughing and singing (and who doesn't?), you can bet that you will once again be able to give a big belly laugh and sing at the top of your lungs once your lungs have been cleared of the mucous and debris left behind by years of smoking. If you are prone to coughs, wheezing, and snoring, stopping smoking will help alleviate these conditions significantly.
- You will have more energy. Smoking robs your body of breath and life, leaving you feeling sluggish and tired. If you quit smoking, you will have the strength to do the physical activities you want to do, without the strain imposed by smoking.

Smoker's Face - Beauty is Only Skin Deep
Key Points
Smokers tend to look older than non-smokers of the same age. Smokers’ facial skin is more likely than non-smokers to have:wrinkles, crow’s feet and a sallow, yellow-grey colouring. Smokers’ skin can be prematurely aged by between 10 and 20 years. The damaging effects of cigarette smoke on skin are irreversible but it is likely that further deterioration will be avoided by stopping smoking.
The underlying biological changes that lead to ‘smoker’s face are not yet fully understood but may be due to damage to small blood vessels in the skin and to the protein matrix (or architecture) of the skin brought about by cigarette smoke or the toxic chemicals in cigarettes. Smoker’s skin is more likely to slough after surgery than that of non-smokers. The skin ageing effect of cigarette smoke is likely also to result from second-hand smoke albeit at a reduced rate; young people working in bars, clubs and restaurants need to be aware of this potential risk. The use of smoking as a cachet in the modelling and fashion industry is totally incompatible with one of its principal aims – to promote beauty.
Explanations
Cigarette smoking is causally linked to: fifteen types of cancer (lung, lip, mouth, pharynx, larynx, nasal cavity and nasal sinus, oesophagus, pancreas, bladder, stomach, liver, kidney, cervix, myeloid leukaemia), as well as coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive lung disease, peripheral vascular disease, still-birth, low birth weight, sudden infant death, infant mortality, congenital abnormalities and miscarriage.
